I have a 93 Mitsubishi Eclipse. It has had a different engine put in as well as a different transmission. I don't know if he did a very good job. My car started smoking only when I would acclerate to get on the highway. Then it started smoking more often. The smoke only comes out of the tail pipe. It is very sluggish, it has a lot of troble get up any speed. This has also gotten worse with the smoke. Please help with any thoughts you might have. I don't want to bring it in untill I have a little idea of what is going on. Thank you, Emily

Cool something I can maybe help someone with, Hi dear your cars timeing is probably to blame I would have to know more spacifics about it to tell you much but the smoking exaust is caused by late ignition. If you switched motors and the electronic ignition does not match for instance the year is different this could be the cause. With old engines it was simple we could adjust almost anything but the new an improved crap is like transplanting a new heart into another person, haha. OK my suggestion if you want is to ask your helper to check anyway he or she can to see if the electronic ignition is a match for the engine and if it's not you can buy one and it is nearly as easy as unplug and replug to change it. I hope this has been of some help dear just ask more if you have more questions, is yahoo not the greatest?

If the smoke has a blueish tint to it, then you are burning oil. This could be anything from a blown head gasket to a piston ring not being sealed. Check your oil level often to see if it is consuming a lot of oil. If the smoke is black, then the car is putting too much fuel into the engine and it is flooding the engine. This is usually a much easier situation to remidy as it can usually be fixed with little expense. I would recommend taking it in soon as if it is an oil problem, if your car runs out, you would be looking at getting another engine put in.

The dolt who put the motor in might have left one of the spark plugs disconnected. Pop the hood and check to make sure all of the plug wires are connected and seated properly.

Dear Emily. You got screwed. Don't you hate that? Mechanics are notorious for this type of behavior. If you have a written warranty from the mechanic that did the work, take it back and insist he honor his written warranty. Threaten him with your uncle who is a lawyer that hates mechanics. If you don't have a written warranty, well, Dear Emily, you got screwed.
