It may or may not. Put a $1,000 in your pocket and go on your trip. If it needs a rack and pinion put one in. If you make it home. Cool but me personally I would put a rack and pinion in it.
You can tell if your rack and pinion are going by
1. Hard steering
2. The steering is loose and then goes hard or vice versa
The second one can also be signs of a pump going.
It also depends on where you went to have your vechile looked at. Did you go to the Dealership or Joe Blow down the road.

Here's what I think:
1. Mechanics are inherently dishonest. They can't help it. Don't hold it against them.
2. If you can't feel anything unusual when you're driving, like slop in the steering wheel, noise when you turn the wheel, or any peculiarity that is outside the normal operating parameters of your vehicle, I'd go on the 900 mile trip, while paying close attention to anything that may start to develop under the hood. Drive safe.

placed the front finally end up on jack stands. Have a pal carry the steerage wheel so it would not circulate in any respect. draw close each front wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock and attempt to shake. See which if any components of the steerage equipment circulate. With the vehicle on the floor, hood open, and motor working, have a pal turn the wheel lock-to-lock mutually as you hear for noises and attempt to perceive the place they're coming from. a uncomplicated source of steerage noise is the steerage pump. what's the situation of the potential steerage fluid? If it relatively is 60K miles previous, evaluate changing the fluid until now changing the rack.

Again, it depends on how it is failing. If it is wearing out your steering could suddenly cease causing loss of control. More than likely it would be fine for a 900 mile trip but you do risk the chance of it breaking down on the trip.

Probably. Mechanics are even more dishonest than attorneys though. I would get a second opinion and don't tell the second one what the first one told you.
