so i went on this site which had some pop-ups and after a while my computer went silent.

i'm running windows xp home edition

i have antivirus installed and running, and also did a sweep with ad-aware

basically there is no sound coming out of the computer anymore, not the clicking while surfing the net, not the music playing on win media player, nothing.

the volume is NOT on MUTE or TURNED ALL THE WAY DOWN, its all the way up, on BOTH the computer and speakers.

i went to SETTINGS then SOUNDS PROPERTY and all the setup seems to be fine.
i went to DEVICE MANAGER and there are NO EXCLAMATION MARKS anywhere.

i restarted the computer and still no sound, not even when windows starts or shuts down (you know the sound)
I also restarted in safe mode and that did not fix anything.

if i turn my speakers all the way up, then press the MUTE on the computer I can hear a little click, which is normal when the speakers are all the way up.

what can it be? its motherboard sound.

First, turn your speakers down so you don't blow them out. :)

Second, go into device manager and uninstall all of the sound drivers. Reboot. Windows should then reinstall the sound drivers. If it can't find them, prepare to use your driver disk or to go online to get them.

Thirds, download spybot:search and destroy and spywareblaster. Update and run them both while in safe mode. That will take care of any potential spyware issues.

It's possible that the sound drivers became corrupt, so reinstalling from a fresh download (from the manufacturer site) would be the best thing to do.

If you are sure it's software related and not something silly like a disconnected cable, save your self alot of trouble and "restore to an earlier time" If it does not work, undo the restore when prompted.
