Get a programmable thermostat. This way you can set it to turn off while you are gone and then turn back on before you get home. I wouldn't recomment turning it down to 60 from 68 though because that's a big difference and it takes ALOT to heat it up 8 degrees. I would go no lower than 3 degrees while you are not there to reduce the cost of heating the place back up.

Turn your thermostat down or get a programmable thermostat. Your furnace is set up to burn a set amount per hour. Say it burns 1 gallon per hour if it ran for a constant hour. If you have to run the furnace for 1/2 hour to warm up the house you only burn 1/2 gallon of oil. That's allot less than running it all day at a 12% increase all day.

that is going to take a lengthy time period to get the abode to warmth decrease back up if you're turning it down so low for this kind of quick era of time. it really is way less complicated on the furnace to go away it at a consistent temp. I were informed that you'll go away in basic terms the fan on and that is going to move the air contained in the abode and activate the nice and comfortable temperature in basic terms even as it needs it. good luck.

actually I would go with an electronic honeywell thermostat that would turn your system up and down based on your schedule...you preset it for days of the week and can override it if something changes...they are only about $30-50 USD and will pay for themselves in about 1 1/2 heating seasons

I would have it turn up about an hour before you wake...turn down about 15 minutes after you leave...up an hour before you get home and back down around your usual bedtime...

This is much easier, more consistent and a more reliable way of saving money and precious resources...

I work in a heating company and you should defintely turn it down when you are leaving the house. Even just a few degrees lower throughout the day will save you money.

i agree about the convenience of a programmable thermostat we have one i love it as far as turning the heat back where you are gone 9 hours YES turn it back. we turn our back to 65 when we leave so it doesn't have to recover quite so much.

I like the answer above. That's funny. Do you leave your oven on when you're not cooking? It's better to turn it down and then turn it back up.

keep it at 68. if you turn it down it run longer to warm up when you get home which will expend more energy.
