Empirical formulae are those formulae which don't have a theoretical explanation. ie They can't be proved. They are solely based on observations & experimental results.

So an emperical formula can't be established on a theoretical base. All you need to do a lot of experiments & examine whether you can find a relation among the variables.

Emperical formulae are found in every stream of Science. They can't be proved to be false on a theoretical basis either.

Case 1.
After collecting the data, you plot the data as usual, this data, may give you a straight line, this is simple by using y=mx+c classic equation you are able to write the equation,by analogy and test it out.

If you do not know this equation then any co-ordinate geometry book will have this equation. look it up or ask the teacher or professor. You must understand this equation.

Case. 2.

After collecting the data, you plot the data as usual, this data, may give you some curve that may look nothing like known curve.

This is not a problem. eg Parabola, Hyperbola , or Ellipse.

You just take logarithm(Ln) of the values and plot the same data. This should give you a straight line, by analogy you have y= mx+c
equation, but it will be in the (Ln) form, using the rules of exponents-combined with logarithm(Ln), now you can have equation that is other then linear. It can be a equation of 2Nd, 3Rd, ...Nth degree curve.

This is how you get an Empirical formula.

Finding the empirical formula of a compund where X %composition is 40% and Y has 40% composition in a compund and Z has 20%

Symbol of element %Composition Atomic weight(S)dividing %comp by atm. Weightdivinding S by the lowest S
X40%1240/12=3.33.3/2=1.67



Y40%2040/20=22/2=1


Z20%120/1=2020/2=10

therefore empirical formula of the compound is X2YZ10

You use empirical data. You conduct experiments and collect data. The more data the better. Then you sit down and analyze the data and see if you can come up with a formula that fits all the data points. Then you test this formula to predict what will happen and observe the results.

Many formulae have been derived using empirical data.

Do you mean the empirical formula of a chemical compound, or the empirical formula linking different observations?

these are not days of calculating emperical fomulas try to calculate mordern formulas.

let c8h6 be the name o a compound...........then its empirical ormula is c4h3..find the highest no.which can divide both 8 ans 6 completely........in this case the highest no. is 2...on dividing 8/2=4.........n 6/2 gives 3..n hence the answer is c4he

First divide the mass of element by its atomic mass.this is no of moles of that element. divide this no. by smallest no of moles. eg
e mass% at. mass no.of moles whole no
c 92.3 12 92.3/12=7.69 7.69/7.69=1
H 7.69 1 7.69/1=7.69 7.69/7.69=1
thus empirical formula of c and h is CH.
