Short-eared owl
Asio flammeus
Male short-eared owls use an aerial display that includes wing clapping to alert his presence to females. They may offer food as a bribe to the female.

Statistics
Short-eared owls are about 35cm long with a wingspan of 105cm. They weigh an average of 350g.

Physical Description
Typically, they have yellow-white and dark brown feathers, but individuals vary considerably in colour.

Females are slightly larger and darker than the males. They have short ear tufts, and are stockier and longer-winged than the long-eared owl.

Distribution
In the UK, short-eared owls are mostly found in the northern half of Britain, but with a few in North Wales and on the east coast of England.

Globally, this owl has a widespread distribution and is found on every continent with the exception of Australia and Antarctica. They inhabit all of North and South America including the coast of the Arctic Ocean.

Habitat
They prefer open, rough and often sloping ground where they have a good view of their surroundings and where they are able to seek prey under continuous grass cover. They may sometimes occupy marshes and bogs.

Behaviour
Females make a nest on the ground and incubate the eggs for 28 days. In a good year with an abundance of prey, the owls may attempt to raise more than one brood.

Short-eared owls are diurnal (active at day) as well as nocturnal (active at night). They hunt voles, mice and small mammals, but will sometimes take young rabbits and small birds.

Conservation status
This species is not endangered, owing to its vast distribution globally. But human activities, particularly habitat destruction by landowners, are causing concern. There are estimated to be just over 2,000 pairs of short-eared owls in the UK.

Voice
Short-eared owls have a considerably smaller vocabulary than the long-eared owl. The chef-chef call can be heard in the spring when the male is under threat, and during courtship, they emit a low-pitched voo-hoo-hoo-hoo or boo-boo-boo call and clap their wings together with sharp pistol-like cracks.

A wildlife vet once told me that an owl's eye is almost 2x the size of its brain. I'm pretty sure that would relate to short eared owls...
