Me and my boyfriend are trying to go to college. I want to go to become an X-ray tech, and he wants to do Computer Engineering. We live in RI now but hate it buecause its too expesive, and the state has NOTHING to offer you.

We were thinking of going to Panama, but i recently was told thats a bad idea. I just want to move somewhere that is different, but affordable...

San Diego.
It has GREAT schools (UCSD, San Diego State, Cal State San Marcos, or there is the community colleges like Palomar or Mira Costa, etc).

It is a beautiful place to live and it isn't too expensive.

I live 2 blocks away from the beach in a 2 bed/2 bath apartment and rent is only $1300.

You have the beach, great night life, nice restaurants, and the people are sooo laid back. It is a great place to live.

AND if you want to go to the snow, Big Bear is only 2 hours away. If you want to go to the desert, Palm Springs is only 2 hours away.... And if you want to go to LA, it is only 2 hours away too! Vegas is only about 4 hours away. You are in the middle of it all.

I'm sure you know that everyone has there own personal idea of what constitutes a great place to live. Quite frankly, so many parts of the U.S. are sky-high in the cost of living, making purchasing a home very difficult at best. I have done a lot of traveling and find the following metropolitan area to still be fairly reasonably priced (you would, I assume need close proximity for a career in engineering.). Mainly souther states such as KY -the Louisville, Lexington, Cincinatti areas - all within a decent commute time still has reasonable real estate. Pittsburgh is a major source of opportunities - likewise, homes still reasonable.
The Birmingham area, with both technological fields and many medical centers (for x-ray tech.) would also be a decent choice, and the weather is fairly mild year-round. Cities out West are outrageous in cost-of-living. The Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina is worth looking into. Hope some of these help.

I think Panama. There are 2 interesting e-books on the matter (nd many more in their site www.expatsebooks.com).
Panama Top Retirement Destination by Richard Burkart. Panama is your best value for offshore retirement. Enhance your standard of living in a low cost, tropical country on a mere 25% of current budget. This book contains a simple message for global “baby boomers” preparing for the most interesting third of their lives. Your choices have never been better! Your opportunity to protect and enhance your lifestyle, over the long-term, are brighter today than you may have imagined although not through the use of conventional “investment and saving” strategies. This book compares retirement “value for dollar” on a global basis and a special focus on Panama.
Living and investing in Panama by Christopher Howard. More than 15,000 Americans currently live in Panama. English is widely spoken in the Panama City area. Another reason for living in Panama is country’s nearperfect climate. Panama City is one of the most vibrant modern and prosperous cities in Latin America with over one million people. The city’s array of tall skyscrapers are reminiscent of Miami. It boasts incredible shopping, where almost any product from the U/S. may be easily found. At the same time you never feel crowded. Panama has the highest rating for tourist safety from the Pinkerton Intelligence Agency. Anyone seeking an alternative way of life, will find Panama the ideal place to live. Panama offers the world’s best incentive program for retires. Residents pay NO local taxes on their foreign earned income. Many Americans living below the poverty line in the United States can live in moderate luxury on a modest retirement or investment income in Panama
But everithing depends on what are you looking for. Brazil is amother good option.

I live in Lubbock Texas, population is about 200,000+ and we have a major University here, Texas Tech University. There is an awesome engineering college here. We have an awesome medical district, mild weather all year round, not a lot of rain, not alot of traffic. The cost of living is rather low, which is great especially if you are just starting out. We are about 300 miles from Dallas and about 4 hours from the mountains of New Mexico if you like to ski in the winter. The BEST thing about Lubbock is truly the people. Everyone is so friendly!!! I hear it ALL of the time!! Best wishes to you and your honey!
