Halloween was originally Samhain (pronounced So-wen). It was a harvest festival and the new year for the Celtic people. Celts beleived that times and places that were neither one thing or the other but a bit of both such as dawn, twilight, beaches, etc... was when and where "things" could happen or cross over into our world. Halloween especially so as the night was not part of the old year and yet not part of the new one.
The barrier between our world and the new world were very weak this night and spirits crossed over some of them wicked. Celts wore frightening mask to encourage them to scare away such spirits and they built great bonfires, made lots of noise, put up jack-o-lanterns (which were turnips in the old country in olden times).
There was no Samhain, lord of darkness, worshipped with sacrifices which some nitwit fundamentalists tend to think there is.

This is one of many sites that can give you more detail on the history.
Some people dress up and either go to a party or go trick or treating. Some people run haunted houses orthers just hand out candy. I know someone that has a Day of the Dead party every year.
Halloween wasn't always about the candy though. It was at one point and time an actual pagan holiday, All Hallow's Eve. It was believed that this night spirits could pass through to this world (at least it was easier for them on this night than on any other). There's more it than what I've written here but check out that website and do an internet search for the history of halloween and see what you find.

most people will dress up in silly or scary costumes and kids go door to door saying trick or treat, translation is "GIVE ME CANDY!" so give them candy! im 15 and i still do this. NEVER TOO OLD TO GO TRICK OR TREATING!!!!!! be careful of the halloween candy lag. im already going hyper on all the sugar. i suggest taking a pillow case if you plan to do alot of trick or treating. churches also do stuff and give out candy some times for hours if you play the games (i cheated at mine. im bad.) but make sure you cheak your candy after wards. some weridos put posion or razor blades in candy to hurt the kids., and keep pets inside! they may get sacrificed by sick people.

you dress up like (traditionally it was as something scary/dead) and you go from door to door saying "trick-or-treat" and people give you candy.
It's from All-Hallows-Eve...a day for celebrating the deseaced. Sorta like the Day of the Dead...only in America in 2006 noone thinks about the history opart anymore. it's about dressing up & getting candy if you're little or dressing up & getting drunk if your grown
