"The Reichstag fire was set by the Nazis themselves and blamed on a Dutch immigrant. With that they had a scapegoat and could tell the German public that they are under attack. This was the reason and opportunity for Hitler to push the enabling act through and cancel the parliament."
Question: Is it possible that history could repeat itself in this sense? If you say no, i'd like to hear why?
Insults and melodrama are unwelcomed. Save your energy. It doesn't faze me.

FYI -Please do not erroneously assume that I am a member of the Democratic Party. I am not. Nor the Republican Party, for that matter.

I quite agree that it is possible. I'm not saying it did not happen here. I just haven't seen the evidence yet to convince me at this point.

It could happen, but the key is control of the media, not control of the government. Had the Nazis had control of the government in the first place, the fire wouldn't have served any purpose.
So if you're thinking the Republicans would be the ones to watch for a repeat of the Reichstag Fire, think again.
Who controls the media? That's your suspect in your hypothetical fire.
Now, if you're not uncomfortable with this, let's review a little recent history.
Bottom line of the AWOL memo's: Fabrication by the media. Reichstag fire that didn't catch?
Bottom line of Bush v. Gore: No similarity between what was reported in the media and the contents of the opinions. People still enraged about it. Reichstag fire that still smoulders?
Bush lied about WMD: Yeah, but the first person to say so was then-President Clinton, and it's been said by nearly every Democrat and heads of most European countries. Is this another Reichstag fire?
Then there's Alex Jones, Michael Moore, and other conspiracy nuts saying Bush did 9/11.
So, yeah, it's possible that history could repeat itself, and if it doesn't, it certainly won't be because no one is trying.

Sure, I can see the Democrat Kos-bots doing this if they don't win next week or in 2008. Look at the violence the left uses to silence conservative speakers, look at the violence they use to protest. They will do anything to regain power.
I keep wondering which color they're going to pick for their shirts. Brown & black have been taken.
Oh, and you can skip the melodramatic scaremongering if you think the Republicans would do this. There is nothing in the history of the GOP, past or current, that would lead any thinking person to that conclusion. And don't bring up that 'Loose Brains' 9/11 fiction.

No. In order to answer your question properly, we must ask what happened to the Reichstag building. As far as anyone can tell it was burned down and not rebuilt. Therefore history cannot repeat itself.
Additionally, the Nazi Party has been outlawed in Germany.

History will always repeat itself. Maybe not in exactly the same way, but generally, because mankind does not and will not learn from it's mistakes.

It's happening right now. It happens because people dont learn from their mistakes nor do they allow anyone to heal from the trauma. Good question, by the way.

No, I do not think it can. People in todays age are more educated and have our nose in everything the government does.
I do think though, anything is possible. But, the tower theory is hog-wash. We did not do that, our government did not do it. It was the terrorists
Thanks
