I have been working on and off for over 20 years.
Companies I worked for went out of business, and I don't know what happened to people I use to work with.
Recent short jobs do not seem to be giving me good references.
I work as an administrative assistant/bookkeeper in the NYC area.

Same thing happened to me - 3 years at a company that closed and cannot get ahold of any ex-fellow employees. I did have contact with the owner, but he as been MIA for over a year.

I use people that knew me from companies I delt with such as suppliers and customers. Contact someone you feel comfortable with and ask for a reference. They may have to check with their HR departments about this, but it's worth the effort.

If you do not have good references and you are truely looking to get yourself ahead, I have the answer for you. I have resently started my own home based business that is proving to be a very profitable business. It is so great because it is something that many people need these days and can't afford, but my company makes that possible.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IS JUST FIND ONE PERSON WHO CAN GIVE YOU A REFERENCE, IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A SUPERVISOR, AND IF ITS REQUESTED ON COMPANY LETTERHEAD JUST MAKE ONE UP, TAKE A FEW OR CUT AND PASTE THE LETTER AND MAKE SURE THAT THE NEW JOB ASK SPECIFICALLY FOR THE PERSON WHO WROTE YOU THE REFERENCE LETTER.
