I have not worked for about 1 year and 3 months due to taking care of a family member. Do potential employees usually asks for some kind of document or proof when i go to an interview that supports my absence fromt he workforce?

No, they just like for you account for any "holes" in employment. Simply listing "Caring for terminally ill family member" (or whatever reason) on the application or your resume is sufficient.

By law, they are not required to ask for such information, but it would probably be in your best interest to provide some form of documentation to prove that's what you were doing. Generally, when a potential employee is unemployed for a long period of time, for any reason, the HR manager will just skip to their job before that and contact their reference person there.

I had taken 15 months off after my baby was born and when I went back in the workforce they asked for my work record over the past year. I said, "I've been off work for 15 months to take care of my baby, but prior to that......" That worked for them and they didn't need any other documentation.

It's usually not a big deal for a woman if you just tell them the reason. They should believe what you tell them. However, for a man, there would be a good chance they would suspect you've been in prison or some such thing.

Good luck.

Potential EMPLOYERS. And no, as long as your references check out, and you state the reason for leaving your last job in the area provided it shouldn't be a big deal.
