Seems like all the ones I have read differently. Also, what's a good salinity/hydrometer brand/kind?

A hydrometer can be off by as much as .005, so I wouldn't suggest getting one. Your bets bet is to get a refractometeer because they are a lot more accurate and easier to read. The place I usually get my aquarium supplies has them on sale for $42.99 (regularly $59.99) This one is portable, requires no batteries and automatically compensates for temperature. Heres the site:

it all depends on the size tank you have but my theory is go with the more expensive one cheaper is not always good
