A "callback" is a second level of audition screening, as opposed to the first, or preliminary, audition. At the prelim, directors and/or casting directors are looking at actors in terms of how they see the characters...there's a lot of "typing" going on. Body shapes and sizes, vocal qualities, actor energies...these are all things that are being evaluated.
If an actor receives a "callback" audition, it generally means that he (or she) is IN THE BALLPARK. At that point, the actor knows that he has made a good initial impression, AND that he is close enough to the director's conception of the character for the director to want him to read more from the actual performance text.
The way I look at it...you pretty much have to take potluck at initial auditions. You may give a brilliant performance, and be ignored because you're just not what they have in mind, physically or vocally. But, if you get a callback...you need to read like that role is YOURS.

Call back i believe is if they liked your performance they will give you a call back to come and be tested or questioned again. The why would be b/c that is how they let you know if you got the part or available is to have a call back

It means they liked you and are calling you back to come in for another audition. Hence the term "call back".

It means that the casting directors like you and want you to come back. It's called a "call back", because they call you back.
