Well i think the american dream is kind of a universal dream. It seems like its just the freedom to pursue one's own dream. I know a lot of people who have moved to the US from all over the world for different reasons. Most have come to follow their own dream or to make money. And often whatever they gain financially isn't all for their personal use. A lot of times is goes back to families or villages in their home countries. It would be interesting to interview different people you know who have immigrated to the US and ask them what their motives are.

Research the 1950's
People were all about The American Dream then.
The guidlines for The American Dream of the 1950's could be something to write about.

The term was first used by James Truslow Adams in his book the Epic of America which was written in 1931. He said, "The American Dream is "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position."

I guess it would depend on whom your talking to,most people would want to not have any pain and suffering,to not have problems relating to money and many people would just love to have a place to call home.
