He likes Green Day---some of their lyrics are over his head and have some swear words, but in general I'm ok with them---He also wants to listen to My Chemical Romance--but I think they are way too dark for a kid his age. Any suggestions for a band that is cool but not too dark would be welcome.

Not too 'up' on current bands as such but if you wanted him to find out or about the roots of punk the The Buzzcocks, The Ramones and The Clash would probably be pretty good for him...It was through having listened to bands like that when I was a kid that mean that when I first heard green day back in '94 when I was in my teens I could appreciate their music and found them really easy to get into...

Check out these. Not punk but neither is My Chemical Romance.
-Damone: Follows older rock ethics
-Dredg: Lyrics are very clean and even spiritual
-The Sleeping: New rock sound
-Emery: New rock sound
-Sum 41: Very good band on the rock /punk sound

There is just a few. It's hard thinking of bands with a non dark sound

Ramones and The Clash are a pretty good starting point - not too much objectionable material, and 9 is old enough to recognize the Ramones' humor and The Clash's political and social viewpoint.

I'm not sure any of thier names anymore, but if you look around in the christian book stores there are a lot of bands that sound exactly like these groups. You may not be of christian faith but I'd rather a kid listen to that than some things he's not ready to hear yet.

like miss Allison said, a lot of "Christian" bands don't have like completely christian themes, but they're cool to listen to and have clean lyrics and meanings like Stellar Kart, Anberlin ( i dunno they're a little dark on some songs, but Time and Confusion is a really fun song) also like Kutlass and Skillet are harder rock, but still clean and stuff.
