It can be expensive to get the initial habitat set up, but after that the maintenence cost is fairly low... Food once a week (price depends on the size of the food item... it's cheaper to buy bulk frozen rodents), any replacement substrate or lightbulbs etc... generally not too expensive, but it's really hard to say, it depends on the species and the setup. I suggest your brother figures out what species he wants, and then he/you can do the research and tally it up... I'm guessing he wants a ball python.

It varies so much depending on species and requirements but after the initial setups and they are very cheap to maintain I spent about 3000$ on my red tail setup and they cost me about 15$a month for food .. but my ball python on the other hand cost me about 500$ for the setup and snake and that snake costs around 5-8$ a month but also the setup for a python can be considerably cheaper I on the other hand like my cages looking high end I hope this helps

You'll have to make sure that you get in contact with a Hobbyist group or find a herpetologist society nearby to join and they can help you with problems, give you advise, get your food and vivariums from and other information you might need.... You'll be able to get stuff from them or they can pass you onto where they get their stuff from.... As a network they're all very friendly and happy to help you out.... They'll be able to offer you the best advise possible and help to setup you up properly....

If it's his first snake then he's better off starting with a corn snake rather than a python as these can be difficult to deal with and could end up unwell or possibly die due to lack of experience and end up very costly in the long run... So best to go for a easy snake to deal with and if he loves it, then he can get another one, unfortunately that'll mean another vivarium, as you might not be able to have them I the same environment together....

As you already know the cost of the food is inexpensive, but the equipment and vet bills can be expensive... But once like others have said, you get the proper equipment and advise up front and the complete setup then you shouldn't have much of a problem.... Keep going to the hobbyist/herpetologist group meetings and seek their advise, you'll also find alot of societies on the internet also, but best to have a local group far easier to deal with..... At least you can get him a few books for christmas and birthdays on snake keeping, make sure you get him one on the type of snake he eventually gets will be handy to have.... Also another book is one of snake diseases as this will be useful in looking after them so you can be aware of what to look out for.... If you can't get these from a library first prior to buying as some books aren't very good... Check the library out first and then if you need to buy the book then go and buy it...

Good luck and happy snake keeping....

A proper set up depends on how large the snake will get-the larget the snake, the larger the tank. Also, tropical snakes will require more heat, humidity, etc.

I spent about $300 setting up my kingsnake.

They only require rats or mice every so often so the monthly cost is minimal. Setup costs are more though. The glass tank, heater, the snake, etc...
