I got 2060 on the SAT. Here's how I prepared.
Critical Reading- I read lots of wordlists from sites like www.number2.com and I did many practice questions.
Math- My Dad is a great Math teacher, and he helped a lot. If you know a good teacher, ask them to help you out. Do a few diagnostic test and then concentrate on your weakest areas. Keep a log of the problems you got wrong and re-do them at some point to ensure that you've honed your skills.
Writing:
Essay- Again, my Dad. Get someone who will analyze your essays critically and who will give you points to strengthen your argument.
MC- Did lots of worksheets with my Mom.
Apart from this, I also did a very helpful collegeboard prep course on the net. I also did a Kaplan training class which was completely useless and I would never recommend it to anyone.
Bottomline- Don't worry about how long you study. Make it good study time where you get the most out of the time you spend. If you can get your parents to help or if you have a good teacher who can support you, there's nothing like it. Finally, be cool while preparing and on test day. The SAT is a minor challenge that we
have to face, so don't get worried or stressed and don't let it scare you.

I just got a call this morning from a high school kid I have been tutoring in a college course. he called to tell me that he scored 2300+ on his SATs that he took a couple weeks ago.
He did not use any books or tutorials for how to do the SAT or try to study for it all. But what he DID do was what all students should do - he studied his heart out for the last year in every single subject, whether he liked it or not. Maybe even studied more for the subjects he didnt like. He wants to be a M.D. and I have not the slightest doubt that he will be a doctor and that he will be a terrific one.
He did what anyone could do! Worked really hard.

I scored a 1290 on mine hungover. It is a standardized test... some people are good at these kinds of tests and others are not. It is nothing to be ashamed of if you don't do well. Those review books are more confusing than helpful in my opinion.

1430 (good enough to get me into Mensa!).
After I didn't do so well on the PSAT, I bought an SAT review book and spent a few Saturdays messing with it -- call it maybe 20 hours total.

1440 or 2150
PSATs
BTW: The SAT measures how well you can take a test like the SAT. It's really a horrible test that doesn't mean much.
