After WW1 southern blacks migrated north seeking opportunities they did not have in the south. This gave birth to The Harlem Renaissance. In some ways they did find better opportunities and in other ways they were still segregated and met with prejudice.

The 1920s witnessed the coming of the "Second Wave" of immigrants to the United States. These immigrants differed from the "First Wave" of European immigrants to the United States in that the majority of them were from Southern or Eastern Europe, whereas in the past the majority had been from Western European nations such as Great Britain, France, and Germany. The immigrants came to the U.S. seeking better economic opportunities for their families, but very often they came across strong feelings of prejudice and nativism from the Americans. The Italians and Irish-Catholics provide good examples of the experiences faced by many of the immigrants in the 1920s. They were victims of discrimination in the work place, were targets of the Ku Klux Klan, and faced various other problems. Below are four links to papers that further discuss the tribulations of Italian and Irish-Catholic Immigrants.

The other thing that happened in twenties was one of the biggest waves of African-Americans moving north. Everywhere that had jobs and would hire blacks - Detroit, steel cities, New York got a large influx of African-Americans. A lot of the black inner-city poverty that you see now is the result of this migration and then the collapse of the automobile and steel industries.

IMMIGRATION AND MIGRATION CAUSED PANIC WITH THE GENERAL PUBLIC (WHITES) AND THE GOVERNMENT, ESPECIALLY IN CANADA. PEOPLE WERE IGNORANT WHEN IT CAME TO NEWCOMERS, THINKING THAT THEIR JOBS ETC. WOULD BE TAKEN, OR THAT THESE IMMIGRANTS WERE SPIES . PEOPLE DEMANDED THAT SOMETHING BE DONE, SO THE CANADIAN GOV'T CREATED INTERNMENT CAMPS. THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE, MAINLY OF JAPANESE ORIGIN (WHO WERE BORN HERE, MAKING THEM CANADIANS!!!!) WERE ROUNDED UP AND DETAINED IN THESE CAMPS UNTIL THE END OF WW2. I THOUGHT WE LIVED IN A FREE COUNTRY!!! ANYWAY, NOW THE GOV'T IS BEING ASKED TO COMPENSATE THESE JAPANESE - CANADIANS, AND TO GIVE THEM A FORMAL APOLOGY. HOPE THIS HELPS.
