I'm afraid rude is winning. It has to do with the way manners are taught (or not) to children. If children are allowed to be rude, they grow up to be rude.

I was born and raised in the South. I am full of "social grace"! Thank you's and please's are a must here. Yes mam, yes sir. I'm 42 yrs old and I swear my sweet momma would smack me if I were rude or disrespectful to someone in her presence!

My dear, no one has time for any kind of grace anymore, social or otherwise. Welcome to the 21st century.
Later - OK. I'm guilty of sarcasm here. Of course I believe in "social graces." I just wish there were more of them, that is more people using them.
