I believe it started when the electric chair was the prefered method of execution. That way the power drain would not be noticed.

People are constitutionally less likely to resist during those hours than during the daytime.

Besides that, it's customary. But as MLaw says, not invariable.

As for sparhawk7322: execution chambers had their own generators for electric power, mostly for political reasons as well as reliability.

maybe is has something to with the "scheduled day" of execution
u know like the day starts at midnight also maybe to give time for the governer to give a pardon lol i dont know
