I have bad knees and a bad back and am looking for shoes that have good support in them. The problem is I don't want them to look like granny shoes. Any suggestions?

It's not just the shoes themselves you need to worry about. It sounds like what you really need are some custom orthotics. I know there are brands you can buy that have been shown on TV and they're ok, but not as good as the ones that are made just for you. My chiropracter's office sells them. They have these boxes specially designed to make a mold of your feet. Your foot is manipulated so the bones line up the way they should, and your foot is pushed into this foamy stuff carefully (it's kinda like the texture of florist's foam). The mold is then shipped off to the factory where your custom orthotics are made from an extremely durable plastic. When you get them, you can switch them from shoe to shoe depending on the type of shoe. If you wear heels, you'll probably need to have a second pair made to work with them, or go without. I would check with a local chiropracter or osteopath in your area to try to track down where you can go to get some made for you.

I find Franco Sarto shoes really comfortable and one of the few that don't make my feet kill. Also Cole Haan has a new line of shoes with Nike technology in them that are a cross between a stylish shoe (including high heels) and the feel of an athletic shoe. Unfortunatley Cole Haan is VERY expensive - not Jimmy Choo or Manolo Blahnik expensive, but stlll pricey.

Adidas has a lot of great choices of shoes with support. I would also try going to a store like Athletic Village or somewhere that specializes in things like that. Cross training shoes always have really good support, as well as running shoes, runners needs good support.

You could always get support inserts for inside your shoes. That way you can wear whatever shoes you want and still get the support you need!

I've found White Mountain shoes to be pretty comfortable, and not that expensive. You can find them at department stores like Macy's.
