the bottom bun is flat so that u will know what end goes down and its thin because its antithetically appeasing to the eye. which means it lets off endorphins in our brain that tells us that we are pleased with what we see.
you would normally think its because the manufacture of the bun wants to make more money for selling less product but in this case its just not true.

so that your burger is always messy...lol...no, i don't know, but i like it that way. I try not to eat a lot of bread, so i can just take the top bun off, and i have less bread with the bottom one being thin.

BECAUSE THE TOPS ARE THICKER, AND IT MAKES IT EASIER TO PUT WHAT YOU WANT ON THE BOTTOM OF THE BUN IF IT IS THIN, I GUESS !!!!!
