I can never remember what occasions to use each of these.

Are some for the web? Others for print?

10 points for the best, comprehensible answer!

GIF = Graphical Interchange Format - relatively low quality images, perfect for low colour images for the web, supports transparency.
TIF (TIFF) = Tagged Image File Format. High quality images, used for print, supports 32 bit depth and can be compressed using the codec's LZW support.
PSD = Photoshop Document. Only way to save your Photoshop files with all layers, etc, in place.
JPEG = Joint Photographics Expert's Group. Lossy compression format, perfect for photographs, but the higher you compress (the smaller the file) the more image degradation you get.
PNG = Portable Network Graphic. Obvious successor to GIF. Supports 32 bit *and* an alpha layer for transparency. Pretty much the perfect format for use on the web.

You can use gif and png exclusively for for the web due to small file sizes and computable with html. Tif and psd format are larger in resolution and heavy file sizes, so used in printing purpose for good results. Format jpeg (or jpg) is used for for both web and print purpose, but for printing purpose jpeg is not recommended. Psd is also used for web but not directly, we can save the psd for web, like images (jpg, gif) and html. Additionally the file format used for the web in RGB and for printing it is CMYK. This is all you want.
