This is a hard one to answer in that it is fairly vauge, but I will give you some pros and cons to the PS2:

first, the Playstation 2 will play both PS2 and original Playstation games, so the game list is vast.

secondly, a PS2 will play DVDs and comes pre-built with the ability to use a PS2 controller to control video playback (unlike other gaming systems where you need a separate remote to control DVD playback).

As for disadvantages, the PS2 uses CD/DVD style media, which are very susceptible to scratches and other damage which renders them unplayable. Also, since the media is serial in nature, the result is a bit longer load time when compared to cartridge/cassette type media (like the N64, for example).

Also, some people prefer the graphics of newer systems to the PS2. However, the PS2 graphics are still impressive.

Hope this helps!

IMHO the advantages of the ps2 was coming out before xbox and gamecube, and about the dreamcast... well, that one didn't had too much success. Another advantage is the games library... hughe... if in the year that came out you were able to play ps games was cool. Now that's past tense. What about now? Well, ps2 has more games than any other console. If you are an rpg lover you will have more rpg's to choose than you may be able to buy. A lot of arcade games, some (like Street fighter Alpha anthology i think) are exclusive for that system. Also has good first and second parties games, like GT or DMC, though other consoles have good exclusives too, like Halo, Forza Motorsports and Ninja Gaiden. The ps2 sold more consoles of the three, so it may be easy to find someone to play or exchange games with. Also it looks really cool.
About the disadvantages, i think, in a subjective aspect, the fact of the lack of power compared to gamecube and xbox. Though it has first quality graphics, it's behind the other two. You need a memory card to save your game's files, or buy a hdd to do dat. The online option is not as good as the live option. The ps2 needs a multitap for having 4 controllers connected.
I think those are the ones i can think right now.
