You can't go wrong with loafers! Today's loafers have a more updated, urban vibe, though. Look for a plain black loafer (no tassles, please!!!) with a rubber sole that is chunkier and more built up than traditional loafers' soles.
If loafers aren't your thing, you could go with some oxfords. They are the tie-up kind of shoes, but once again, look for a thicker rubber sole so they don't end up looking like old-man wingtips.
Athletic shoes are always a difficult choice, but whatever you do, please stay away from the big, clunky, overly white tennis shoes your age group seems to prefer, and go with a nice, semi-colorful athletic shoe. These new kinds of sneakers are being worn by young guys, but men of all ages look fantastic in them, and they go with any color you want to wear them with. They are sort of reminiscent of the old-school Nikes, Adidas, and Pumas that used to be popular in the late 70's and early 80's. (It's all coming back!!)
I have included some links to give you a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Black leather square toe. Try Steve Madden, Kenneth Cole, Ferragamo (depending on how much money you have). Find a Shoe Pavillion and get them for less!
Or a Nordstrum's Rack
