How can you tell the difference between ipods?

I need to know if I have the first or the second generation. I'm looking into buying an FM transmitter for my Ipod nano but the one I'm looking at says it doesn't fit second generation nanos so what's the difference between them.

Look at the connectors on your Ipod... the newer Ipods only have a USB port (thin rectangular port), while first generation Ipods have FireWire ports as well (thicker, more square ports). You can search the internet for USB and FireWire symbols if you are unsure.
