Lynching most generally ends in death, although there have been some people who survived attempts at it, but then it is attempted lynching.

Most victims of lynchings were hanged. I believe the word lynch actually means to put to death by illegal action, generally by hanging.

Lynching was originally hanging a person without trial. It was named for a captain the Washington's army who used this method for dealing with Tories. The city of Lynchburg VA was also named for him.
I think to charge with lynching, you would have to establish that they intended to kill you.

A lynching is when they hang you by the neck with a rope, and the person usually dies. Did they put a rope around your neck and try to hang you?
If not they would be charged with assault and battery.
