First, Ethanol/gas mix, made from corn.
Second, Hydrogen cell made from electrolysis of water.
Third, eventually, Hydrogen fusion. (When we learn how to do this effectively, we have gone to the planets baby.)
I can see large helium filled balloon ships becoming transports for goods.

I have seen cars working with potatoes or potatoe peels I'm not sure (I think it had to do with the starch)... so nothing would surprise me after that.
