Yes, sharing an ADSL connection splits the speed between all computers sharing the connection. If you are uploading at a high ratio, other computers may notice a slowdown.

The cable from the wall to the modem is a phone wire - an "expensive" 25 foot one is about $10. (It's not the cable - cheap connectors cause noise, which causes a slower connection.) The cable from the modem to the computer is an Ethernet cable. You should be able to find a good100 foot cable for under $10. (Even if the cable is bad enough to cut the speed by half, the cable can handle 1000mbps, and your modem can't do 500mbps [maybe 50mbps], so the cable won't determine the speed.)

Other computers on the same network will be effected by your upload. The DSL bandwidth is split between all of the computers on the network. Its not as bad as cable, where the bandwidth is split over an entire neighborhood, but you are still sharing your connection.

They say that DSL, unlike Cable modem, is not affected by the amount of traffic at a given time.
