My brother is gay and it doesnt bother him at all, most of the time he laughs because as soon as i realize i've said it, i look at him and say uh..sorry!! But yesterday i was on the phone outside and i said something like "that shirt was so gay" and this boy in the office next door who is gay turned around and gave me the ugliest look!! It's SO unintentional, and I mean nothing by it, because it's been a slang thats been used for so long it's hard to break. Anyways, does it bother/annoy/piss you off? Yay or nay?

It doesn't piss me off because it doesn't do any good to get angry at institutionalized homophobia. Yeah the phrase is common as dirt, but that doesn't mean it isn't homophobic and stupid.

The phrase "that is so gay" operates on the idea that "gay" becomes equal to something negative. Gay means stupid, ugly, bad, evil, and/or negative.

It is just emotionally taxing to be someone else's pejorative. It is tiring. It is silly to watch people who claim to support gay people buy into a system that uses insulting language and to see those same people defend a phrase like "it's so gay".

I've also noticed a generation gap on stuff like this. The older you get, the more it bothers you. "That's so gay" was common in my high school six years ago, and I thought it was nothing. Now the more I walk in the world, the more I see that all homophobia, no matter how common, or misguided, or insignificant, is something.

The fact that it's unintentional doesn't make it any less offensive. i personally try not to hold it against an individual....the first time. But it IS offensive, and if you do it repeatedly, I assume it's because you know it's offensive (because I'd have told you the first time) and you don't care. There is NO "spokesperson" for gay / lesbian people, so that any one person is not offended by it doesn't really mean much. Fact is, it can be offensive (and I'm sure you can understand why), so it's probably best to make a conscious effort to remove it from your vocabulary.

I'm now not angry. Getting angry will get us nowhere. But I do disagree. The intent God is known as He is seeing that God made guy the chief and authority. By suggesting that God is a she, we say that there's anyone or whatever that has extra authority over God. Also, Jesus used to be despatched to earth as a person. This additionally shows that God isn't a lady. However, we all know that God isn't a he or a she, seeing that he isn't confined to human features or knowledge. - Christian

Yes it does! Just because something has become popular or "the thing to do" doesn't mean that it is right or even respectful! Slavery was the norm, did that make it right? You should be respectful and thoughtful of everything you say. The question should be how would YOU feel! What if every time something bad happened, everybody said "that was so (fill in your first name here)." If your name/race/religion was used to portray negativity, would you like it?

I'm guilty of using this expression and I am not gay nor have a brother that is gay, but I do have gay friends both male and female and they seem somewhat split on how offensive this expression, which sounds like is your experience as well. But thinking about it, it really is a bad expression, " that's so gay" meaning that is so horrible, bad, stupid etc... well thinking about it of course I can see what's offensive, so even though it doesn't offend everyone I think it is a sexist, demeaning saying that should go the way of the buffalo.

I don't hate it. Gay seems to have 3 meaning now. Very happy, likes the same gender, and stupid or ugly. It depends on the context that the word it used in.

It makes me cringe a little bit inside, but I don't bother objecting any more. If it's a close friend or something I'd tell them I prefer them to use a different term, just out of respect.

It used to, a little bit, because the word "gay" is being used in a negative way. Now when I hear it, it doesn't bother me. It's just a word, and I take it from where it's coming.

No, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. There are bigger things going on in the world to worry about. People seem to be oversensitive at times, thats why theres all this hatred and crap in the world.

A friend of mine is a lesbian and if I said that in front of her she would sit me down and lecture me for 10 minutes of why i shouldn't say that. It doesn't bother me it's just people are too overly sensitive and saying that isn't hurting anyone.
