Saying 'yay' big is usually accompanied by a hand gesture of some sort to give the listener an actual reference as to the size of whatever is being described as 'yay' big.
This obviously annoys you to no end so next time someone tells you something is 'yay' big ask that person what standard of measurement is a 'yay?' Is it a foot, is it a ton..., is it unknown so that the person describing it doesn't come across as a complete idiot, (even though) anyone describing something 'yay' big is just using a local dialectical colloquialism and could give you a more precise description, but not wanting to sound 'geeky', 'yay' big (or there abouts), usually covers the less precise description.
Good Luck...

Yay big usually is follwed by pointing to something as reference or holding out your arms and giving a representative measure. Alone, yay big means nothing.

Yay big,
its actually
"Yeigh big"
It means if you dont have an actual measure,
its like saying "about This big"
usually people spread their arms to the length.

Yay usually is accompanied by a hand motion to show approx. how big whatever it is is. I don't know where the word yay comes from.

I think the person will indicate how big 'yay' is with their hands/arms while they say it sometimes.

There is usually a hand gesture accompanying that statement.
Holding your hands at a certain distance, to give a visual example of how big something is.

this is a hillbilly term city folk wouldn't understand. for example: it someone were to ask me how tall my grandson was, i would hold my hand up palm down, up to my hip, and say "he's about "yay" big. hope this helps..
