LAN - local area network WAN - wide area network MAN - metropolitan area network The only real differences are the areas covered. LANs are generally small networks - like for a single building, company, office or home. MANs are targeted providing coverage to an entire city. WANs are for connecting 2 or more LANs together that are geographically distant from one another. A company may use a WAN to connect a remote sales office with the corporate office on the other side of the country, for instance. Another instance would be connecting your home/business to the internet via your ISP's WAN. These are mainly organizational terms - there is no real differentiation in the equipment used to establish a LAN/WAN/MAN.
