i don't smoke but i can relate to the question by being a daily morning coffee drinker; that first cup is perfect, the ones after just keep ya going but the first one is like heaven.
so, anyway, the reason for this is due to the craving. as we give in to our craving we don't crave them as much.its just that simple.

It's a combination of (1) excitement/anticipation for the cigarette, and (2) the addictive nature of tobacco. Once you complete that first puff, the thrill diminishes, but you are now smoking and in the throes of your addiction so the rest becomes a habitual blur. At that point it doesn't matter if each puff is as good as the first. You are hooked and programmed into smoking that cigarette!!!

Because the subsequent puffs are contaminated by the burned "tar" from each preceding puff.
