This is a great question, and this reminds me of school life, especially when you get really excited to meet some of your own people. For me, it's Pakistanis or Indians, and when I am observing and asking questions to a few Pakistani or Indian girls what I notice is that they don't know much about their background and don't have interest in it. I notice this during history class, for example, when we are having discussions on different religions or cultures. And it's like I am the only one talking about the Indian sub-continent... and gosh it's weird because the other fellows aren't even helping me lol. And you know what, I think it's maybe the parents... probably they don't teach their children about the good qualities of their culture, religion, etc.

In studies I have read it comes from several areas. One is are you ashamed because of what you believe in now? Are you ashamed becaused someone has shamed you into believing your culture is wrong. You cannot be forced to celebrate your culture, but it is a shame when someone takes it away from you.

Some people are ashamed of their cultural backgroud becuase they may feel werid or akward because all of their other friends are from another backgroud. It really cool to have culture in your life so I dont really understand why some people are afraid. It may be because they feel like if they tell theiir friends, their friends would not want to be freinds with them becasue their diffrent

it's because they care about what other people think. for example, i know a lot of arabs who are ashamed of being arabs/muslim because of the discrimination they may get. i even know this asian guy who is ashamed that he is chinese because his eyes are slanty, which is an extremely stupid reason to be ashamed of being chinese. there are lots of reasons.
