I have had my laptop for 3 years....normally how long does a laptop last? Also since my dad said he will buy me a new laptop when I go home for thanksgiving break, which laptops are good for a full time college student that goes to school away from home?

hi!
as per my experience - usually laptops do fine till warranty period 3 yrs... :-)
you know one of my friend didn't get any problem with his laptop till 3 yrs and when its warranty period went off, it started to give him many problems during next 6 months.... and its spare parts are not cheap... so he preferred to change laptop.....

as look around for a laptop life, it seems 3 yrs minimum & 5 yrs maximum.... :-)

best wishes

With abuse it would last maybe a year or a little more, or at least till the end of warranty. However, It can last you a life time, YES, you heard me right. If you treat it right.

What kills a laptop? HEAT! I can't stress this enough. If you game on your laptop it will die even sooner. Why? again HEAT. However, if you can minimise heating. I would last much longer. At most you'd need to replace your cooling fan, your optical drive or your HDD (Hard Disk Drive).

When choosing a HDD you need to look for a drive that has the least number of platters 1 is better than 2 and 2 is better than 3. It depends on the technology at the time. These days a single platter can hold 500gb. Apart from the number of platters. You need to look at the rmp as well; 5400 rmp HDDs are better than 7200 rmp HDDs they generates less heat and lasts longer.

In order to tackle heating issures, firstly, you can under clock you processor so it wouldn't heat that much.

How: Windows 7

1) Power Options
2) Change Plan settings (Balanced)
3) Change Advanced Power Settings
4) Processor Power Management
5) Maximum Power State
6) Set it to 45%

This would increase your battery life and generate less heat. You don't really need that much processing power to browse the web, to watch a movie(Unless it is a 1080p) or to use word processor. You wouldn't even notice much of a difference.

Next, you need to get your self a laptop cooler, and then modify it. You'll need to find the area that heats the most, every laptop has a different design hence different heat signature. You'll need a fan, may be that of a AGP or similar 40mm fan and then make it run just under the area. Next you'd need a power brick 12volts 2amp to power your fans without heating up.

Hope it helps...

I've been using the same laptop at work for over seven years and it still works just great!

(it is a Dell, by the way)

(No, my company is cheap, I just keep telling them that I don't need a new one yet)

We've had to buy a new battery for it once in a while, and once we had to replace the power / charger cable, but the machine itself has had absolutely no problems at all.

The problem is that if I ever needed a part, it would be really hard to find.
Also, technology had gone way beyond what my tired but trusty friend can handle.
You can just about plan to buy a new machine every 3 or 4 years to keep up with the new software/technology being created.

All depends how it has been taking care of. Laptops can last up to 15 years if taking care of properly

it relies upon the way you're looking after it. oftentimes laptops over warmth and want each and all of the cooling they want. they get cloged with airborne dirt and dirt and creat airborne dirt and dirt balls interior the intake of the laptop. if u sparkling it with airasol cans(severe rigidity air cans) they are going to be around u for a protracted time. make effective u do no longer drop it. doing so can injury the motherboard wich is the suitable area of the laptop or injury the actuator arm of the no longer easypersistent, hell or maybe the reveal its self.

I hate to break it to you. But I have worked on computers long enough to know that after three years any brand/type, Desktop or Notebook will start acting up. Computers are just like cars they wear out their compents and will always need replacing.
