I have asked people that smoke the same question and most of them say its because there gonna die anyway. but the thing of it is, God has provided us the chance to live forever on a paradise on earth. he gave his only begotten perfect son to equal out the other perfect son he lost to sin Adam. but he also said not to defile your body. and also to respect the life god gave you cause its precious. so how can they live if they cant obey god commands.

they crave it. their body goes through withdrawal and it makes it harder for them to relax comfortably with out a smoke. (people who already smoke).
new smokers probably don't think they will become dependent
