Sunshine is right. You need to call your local Department of Social Services. They can assist you in obtaining shelter. If you are homeless they will put you up in either a shelter or a hotel room. You can't really pick and choose and it depends on whats available in your community.

In my county we only have a shelter for homeless woman and a seperate one for homeless men. But, married couples, partners, or families are put up in hotels.

Try this website for numbers to your local office:

That would be very hard to find. and why do you need that? Is there some reason you cannot work, even if it means working at McDonalds?

And just to clarify, I use to work in a shelter, and it is not somewhere where you can have your "own space". Shelters are crowded, you typically share bathrooms, and are expected to do your share of cooking and cleaning. It is not always a pleasant experience.

If you are not capable of working due to physical disability, I'm sure there are programs in your city or state that provide you with funding assistance. Like I said, I can't imagine why 2 people who have no kids can't get a job and make enough to to afford an apartment. Try looking into "rooms for rent, without board". It would be more private and you wouldn't be living of the system.

Yes you will be split up and no you won't get a private room. If you are able to find spots in a co-ed shelter, your husband will be over with the men and you will be over with the women. Homeless shelters do not have the funding to provide private quarters. Even worse, if you are a woman with a male child over a certain age (sometimes as low as 10), they separate you from your son and he will be alone among the men while you are far away with the women. Many boys have been harmed in this way and it's one of the system's dirty little secrets. A homeless shelter is a place of absolute last resort and there is no comfort and no safety offered. It's much better to live in your car than a shelter. I would recommend avoiding a shelter at all costs and trying to find friends to stay with, even if you have to stay with separate friends. At least that way you can see each other as often as you want. Shelters have strict rules and schedules and you won't see your husband much - maybe at meals. Edit: A former poster is correct in that some shelters are just big rooms with cots. That would be at least a better option than being completely separated.

Go to social services and request for welfare housing or homeless shelters.
