P W Botha was the State President of South Africa in the 70's and 80's. Just before F W De Klerk, who was the predecessor of Nelson Mandela.

Nothing positive, even though he was the one who started the process of freeing Mandela and ending the war in Angola?

I think of him as an evil white supremist and contrary to previous answer he did not start the release of Mandela . In fact his "crossed the Rubicon" speech asserted that Mandela would stay in prison for ever - and all his ANC supporters if they had enough prisons. As a leader he was responsible for the incarceration of thousands of black children - potential threats apparently - and many other atrocious actions. I am glad he died peacefully -thats more than those who suffered under his regime had the benefit of. Good riddance. His only use is to remind us how not to behave.

Yes, I wondered why he lived so long - he was in his eighties when he died. The average life expectancy for Black South Africans is far lower, I am sure (although I don't know what it is)

I'm not proud of this, but I always get some satisfaction when an evil person dies early, or has a lingering, painful end. I do hope he did not go peacefully, in his bed, surrounded by a loving family, that would have been way too good for him.

But it's all random, so who knows. Glad he's gone, anyway.

His government was somewhat more receptive to the rights of non-whites in South Africa, but still not nearly enough. When you boil it down, he was just another Apartheid-based leader. This makes him pretty unremarkable to me. He had opportunities to be great, but instead he repeatedly chose to uphold Apartheid. Any greatness he might have had is (rightfully) Nelson Mandela's instead.

P W Botha loved South Africa and fought dearly that no harm should come to it. He protected South Africa to the fullest. May he rest in peace.

He was extremely racist just like Louis Farakahn, Jesse Jackson, Strom Thurmond, Nathan Bedford Forrest, Kanye West, and many others. He saw race above all else. I'm sure he is enjoying his "reward" already for a life filled with hatred.

Yeah, I have thoughts about him, but nothing good. He upheld the racist Apartheid regime. He takes a lot of sad memories of South Africa to his grave with him.
