He didn't get blamed..GMAB....besides he was given a full pardon by Bush Sr.

He took over where RM left off.....who had done the deal thru Israel.

ON came up with a hair brain idea to sell arms directly to Iran and to funnel the money to Nicaraguan guerrilla fighters....in hopes there would be no money trail...obviously that didn't work.

Oh...and they sold drugs too

Ok the US goverment backed Saddam in the war with Iran because of the hostage situation. In the 80's and Early 90's Saddam had the largest military in the region until the gulf war. Saddam was at war with Iran because he felt that the oil fields in Iran was part of the Ottaman Empire which his country used to rule and wanted to take it back. Once he was'nt able to take Iran he went to Kuwait which lead to Desert Storm in the 90's. Hope this little history lesson helped.

At the time, Iraq was at war with Iran, and Iran was not on our Christmas card list. It was after the Iran hostage ordeal, and the U.S. backed Iraq in the war. They were (at the time) the "better of two evils".

Ollie North took the fall for the Iran-Contra affair, which was a whole different matter.

That was the Iran - Contra affair. We were selling arms to Iraq to fight the Iranians and using the profits to arm the Contras in Nicuragua. Great Republican era stuff.
