try doing a defrag (access it from control panel on the pc menu). Also delete your temporary internet files - they can slow it up. Finally, download a free prog called Ad-aware and run it - it removes spyware that can make the pc run slow xx

This is perhaps one of the most common questions regarding home PC's. An increasingly slow PC can be caused by a whole range of factors.
Applications running in the background can be slowing it down, so make sure the only programs constantly running are definetly needed such as a Firewall. A free program on the web called "HiJack This" can be used to view which programs open when your PC starts up. You can also click on Start, Run, and type "msconfig", and then click on the Startup tab. Make sure you only deselect programs you know for definite you don't need running.
Your PC could be full of clutter and junk files which are not required and build up resulting in a slow computer. Go into the Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel and remove any software you don't need on your PC. Also get a program that will help remove any junk files, have a look on www.download.com for any useful software - I am using System Mechanic which is good.
Your registry could be full of errors, and this can be corrected using a Registry Enhancer program such as Registry Mechanic - also available from the link above.
The files on your hard drive could be scattered all over the place, so use the built-in defragmentor software within Windows.
Temporary or zero-byte files can be loaded in memory, so use the Scandisk or CheckDisk feature of Windows by right clicking on each hard drive you have, and selecting it to run.
A lack of RAM could be causing problems, 512MB recommended RAM to run Windows XP along with any other software you have. There is no such thing as 'too much RAM'.
And the biggest issue in slowing down PC's, is malware, these include viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, adware, keyloggers, diallers, etc etc etc. Make sure you have a Firewall installed (ZoneAlarm is free from the web). Install and run a virus scanner, AVG Anti-Virus is free. And finally install at least two different spyware programs, the standard industry software is Lavasoft's Adware, which is free. Other free spyware programs include SpyBot, Ewido, Tenebril's SpyCatcher Express, and also Sophos Anti-Rootkit for specific rootkit malware. If you want to buy a spyware program then try Spyware Doctor from PC Tools, or CounterSpy from Sunbelt.
If after trying and eliminating all of the above your PC is still slow, it could be a hardware issue. How old is your processor and motherboard? I can't see it being a hardware setting within Windows, as usually Windows automatically adjusts hardware driver settings for optimum performance. Have you installed any new software or hardware, after which your PC suddenly became slow?
Lots of examples and stories about malware causing PC's to slow down:-

Hope this helps.

First thing to try is see what programs start when your computer turns on. Download this program: http://www.windowsstartup.com/ and use it to remove things you don't want (it's easier to use than msconfig). After that, try Disk Cleanup and Defragmenter, both are found in Start Menu>Accessories>System Tools. If that still doesn't help, your options are reinstall Windows or buy more RAM. Over time, your computer slows down due to errors and it needs a complete reinstall to fix it. Buying RAM costs you money but it is well worth it. After upgrading to 1GB of RAM on my PC, it runs very fast.

Defrag it.
Scan for Viruses, Spyware etc.
Try uninstalling programs you don`t use anymore.
Use a cleaning program to get rid of junk files.
Clean out your registry using Reg Cleaner.
If it is still slow, upgrade to extra memory and/or hard disk space.
Upgrade the CPU.
Buy a new computer.......

I'd imagine your PC is full of files not needed. CCleaner.com, a free progam, will clean off all the files not needed. Such as tmp, cookies, registry errors. Download it and run it. I've used it and so far I haven't had any problem and fact is it's made my PC perform better. The first time you allow it to clean the registry "I would" allow it to back it up. Once you done that reboot it the PC and then run defrag, maybe even defrag a couple of times.

It is possible that you have an overflow file and too many
applications installed. Empty caches, and dump the applications
you don‘t use, that is if you have CD version. Most computers
have many applications on one CD and if you are unable to
"custom" install only the ones you need, dump the idle ones
and gain more free space. Your computer will be grateful and
you can always re-install if needed.

Go to all programs then accessories, then system tools. There is a disc defrager and disc cleanup. Try those it should help. You may just have unwanted stuff on the computer.
