I think the best free anti virus program is the Free AVG. It works well and it doesn't weigh or slow down my computer like other anti virus programs can.

I use and feel 100% confident that "Avast", free for home personal use is far superior to "AVG". There free version is the same version that they offer corporate. They just make corporate pay.

Avast has a state of the art background scanner, that comes with the free version. The background scanner works 100% of the time an uses very little resources. (Entire program). The background scanner will find and destroy any virus or trojan that is found embedded on a webpage that you may open. Will destroy before the virus can get into your system. You can a pop up advising you that a virus has been found and destroyed.

Plus you get two or three times per day automatic updates. If you have your speakers on you will always hear a male voice advising you that "virus updates and been installed", or a virus has been found and destroyed. (Plus you still get the blue pop-up from the tray with either the update or a virus as been found).

Excelllent if you download a program and save it. Then you can scan with avast before you open the programs for hidden embedded viruses.

http://www.avast.com I used their free program for nine plus years an I never had one virus.

This program gives you alot for being free. Far superior to any free or purchase. Plus no conflicts with http:/www.emsisoftl.com A2Square Anti-Malware, or http://www.ewido.net (now owned by "AVG", anti spyware.).

Personally, I use the AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not.

Not only good but better and free is ANTIVIR!

If you try other above mentioned antivirus, just don't forget to try also ANTIVIR. I'm using for more than 6 years now and yes, I tried most antiviruses there but I like ANTIVIR.

Though it can automatically update its file, you can force to update it (I done it twice a day! 7:30am & 7pm - it did update!). Imagine how many viruses created daily and check if other antivirus can update this fast!

AVG Free from Grisoft, regularly updates itself and I've never had a virus since installing.

AVG is totally worthless. It is JUNK. I recommend active virus shield. And yes it is free.
