In the UK and with NPower. During the summer the gas bills are about £40/quarter.

Now we have the heating on its costing me £5.00 day! This is going to be £450 next quarterly bill. What I really want to know is that for those with gas, how many kilowatts / cubic feet / cubic metres of gas are you using per quarter. Check your statement if you don't know because I'm realy trying to work out what the average user uses in volume rather than price.

Since yesterday I have used 4 cubic feet of gas. Is this too much per day (three bed house) Maybe the heatings too high or the insulation is cr@p!

Gas is measured in Kwhr to enable comparision with other fuels.
During the heating season in the UK, which is approx 40-44 wks long an average 3-bed house, with average insulation will need a heat input of 30-40 Kwhr daily.
This assumes that
1/the thermostat is set correctly
2/ the timer is set for economic useage
3/ the windows are not open all day
4/ hot water useage is minimised
5/gas used for cooking is minimised
6/you do not use an open gas fire
7/ you have at least 6" of roofspace insulation
With all of the above optimised you should revert to the average useage of say 35 kw hrs daily which should be around £2.10 per day.
Hope this helps

You should pay your rent in full. You should also meep on to the landlord for dates of when to expect repair man etc. It can take a long time to get anyone out to a job. I know this from experience. You are responsible for your energy bills not your landlord. I agree with the others who ask - if it is only the thermostat which is not working - why not fix it? rather than sit cold and keeping yoruself warm by moaning do something proactive. It shouldn't cost much. As for the functioning of the boiler - that should be checked/serviced and you should get a certificate every year. Check the date on your last certificate - is the boiler due a service? I personally do not have the CH on at all as I do not intend having a massive bill I cannot afford to pay. CH is really a luxury IMO and there are other ways to keep warm. We are all so used to being comfortable we have forgotten how to do the most basic things ourselves. Even if I could afford to run CH I wouldn't because I find the costs insulting. I am amazed at how warm some people'[s homes are (tenants) when I visit, especially as they are mostly on LHA and benefits, I off course work for my money so cannot possibly afford such a luxury.....hell I dont even have a widescreen telly............. Sorry, back to the matter in hand, it would be a simple job to fix or replace the thermostat yourself, althoguh you are tenants the property is still your home and little things like this are easier sorted than reported and moaned about. What would you do if you needed a washer on your tap or you had a blocked sink???

Four ways to reduce your bills;

1. Check out who the cheapest supplier in your area is (try uSwitch or a similar website) o they'll also tell you if you are paying over the odds for a house of your size.
2. Be energy efficient - insulate the house, use low enery bulbs everywhere you can, and enery efficieint appliances (turn off things you don't need on standby fro example)
3. Go duel fuel - that is have your gas and electric with the same supplier - they give you discounts
4. Pay by direct debit - easier collection = more discounts.
