My friend who is African came to England recently and attended some job interviews in customer service. On 2 different occasions, he was told that he has a strong African accent and people might find it hard to understand him and for that and some other reasons was not considered for the job.

Because us Americans and the British are sick and tired of getting "customer service" from people we can't understand. It's not discrimination. If I go to Africa and my Boston accent is not understandable I don't expect Microsoft Africa to make me a phone support technician.

I'm just so sick of people using discrimination as an excuse!

no longer probable, to be straightforward. we hear american accents everywhere, like on small screen television, radio, song, video clips etc. so i hate to assert this yet we are style of aggravated by capacity of it. plus you adult men communicate very slowly announcing the postvocalic Rs. no longer my cup o tea. for the comparable reason we've not have been given any problem in information american english. the explanation why you adult men have a no longer common time information some accents is which you're extra patriotic/nationalistic and don't attempt to understand those with distinctive accents, forcing the immigrants to assimilate into the way people could desire to be. people understand different english accents extremely nicely in different english conversing international places. sorry if i've got indignant you. no malice.

That is just discrimination. Does England have laws against that, as America does? Here, it doesn't matter what you accent is, just as long as you can communicate effectively.

"people might find it hard to understand him"... You answered the question yourself. (Unless he applying for a job where he would be speaking his African language to customers and fellow employees.)
