Stephen King wrote 'Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption'. It's a short story in the book 'Different Seasons'. It is a good story and one that tranlated well to screen.

Stephen King. The Shawshank Redemption. One good thing about the movie is that it follows the book line for line. If you've seen the movie, you've read the book.

It was Stephen king and I believe it was written under his psuedonym "Richard Bachmann"

As a side note...the movie "The Running Man" with Arnold Schawarznegger and Richard Dawson was also a novel by King/Bachmann
