I love mystery stories. I love to write stories too.

Well when I start to write different scenarios come into my mind. You know...how would it go from this point if I started like this and what not.

There are many different ways to start off a story.

You can start of by telling the character's name and background.

Start by setting the scene at the beginning of the crime. Like by starting off by telling the setting and then go into the plot from there.

You can start off by just going straight into the mystery.

I hoped some of this helped. I like to write fanfiction on fanfiction.net. I write Sly Cooper fics in the video game category. Check the site out...it may help you a little.

I'm assuming this is a kids book, right. If so then start off basically with character introduction and how the interest in cooking developed. Something like this......"George loved to cook, he loved it so much that the kitchen was practically his favorite room in the house. Why George loved to cook no one knew. It could have been from spending time with Grandma in the kitchen during the summer , or maybe in his stepfather's resturant no knew. but they one thing that everybody knew was that George loved to cook." and if you use that you better give me my props on the inside cover.
Best of luck
