July 28, 1914 - November 11, 1918

It started with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 18, 1914. He was heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. He was shot by a Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip. Princip was a member of the Young Bosnia, a youth organization that wanted to be part of Serbian or some other South Slavic lands. This started the war in July when Austria-Hungary accused Serbia of the assassination. After this, most of Europe became involved through all the secret alliances that had formed over the years.

Germany, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire sided with Austria-Hungary forming the Central Powers. Then France, Italy, Great Britian and Russia with Serbia which became the Allies. Later as the war continued, the United States sided with the Allies when the they declared war on April 6, 1917.

I hope this helps.
