Well, labour is different for everyone, just as pregnancy is. Everyone will tell you something different. For myself, I had my daughter early, and let me tell you, the contractions are still the same! I am a delivery room nurse, and everyone handles labour pains differently. I have had patients who don't use any pain control, and others that cannot control their pain! Epidurals do have side effects, but not everyone will get them. Inform yourself of these side effects before making the decision to have one. I had an epidural with my daughter, and did not experience any side effects. I really liked it, and with any more baby's i will make sure I have that option! Do lots of research, it helps to be infomed!

Well, in my case, my labor was traumatizing. That's not every case though. As far as the epidural, I went into it all saying I'd try it natural first... if I needed to, I'd get one. I needed one after my water broke. I was fine with the epidural for several hours- even giggling with my Dad! Then, the last 4 hrs of the 19 hrs, my epidural wore off entirely- I've never cried harder in my life- by then I was almost fully dilated... my baby just wasn't descending down. They rushed me c-section- tried the spinal epidural, and I felt them poking my belly when they were testing. So I told them, then they said they had to put me under :( So all of that, and the pain from the c-section was awful.
However, this doesn't happen a lot. Get the epidural if you need to, you will be fine with it- they do a good job placing them. And if you are having strong contractions at the time, you won't even feel it because your pain hurts worse. They will go over everything that could happen. I had tingles (I think from the spinal epidural) up to a week or two after the c-section, but it went away. Other than that I was fine... and everyone else I know-their experience went very well and had no problems afterwards.
Goodluck!

Labour is different for every woman, but the first baby is usually the hardest. I have had 2 children and I asked for an epidural with both. Complications from this procedure are rare, but you should talk to your Dr. about it so you are aware of the risks. Your Dr. needs to know ahead of time that you may want one. When I had mine done, it was amazing! I was able to focus on the experience instead of the pain. You need to know that an epidural must be done before a certain point in your labour or you cannot get one. The procedure is done by an anesthesiologist (sp?) and the pain is minimal compared to the contractions! I had no side effects from either procedure. Remember to tell your Dr. that you want one so he/she can be prepared and congratulations!!

I am also pregnant with my first baby and Due March 1st, 2007. I'm pretty freaked out about the whole labor thing too, so don't feel bad I'm assuming it's normal. I have two sister-in laws who have had the epidurals and had some complications with them. One of them has told me not to have an epidural and several of my other friends say they would have never made it through the birth of their children without one. My sister in law told me that she had really hard time determining when she needed to pee for like a week after the epidural, she also said she couldn't feel her legs for like 4-5 hours after her son was born. I figured it would be normal to be numb for a while but she claims she shouldn't have been numb for so long. She says all she wanted to do was get up and take a shower and she couldn't because of the lasting effects of the epidural. She decided to have her second son naturally without any drugs and she said that it was so much better than having the epidural. compared to what other women, family and friends has told me I'm expecting labor to be pretty excruciating. I'm definitely going to get an epidural as soon as they will allow me to have one. I have had a spinal tap before so I know what the pain of the actual epidural will feel like. The local they give hurts for a second and then your back gets all tingly and you can't really feel it after the local takes affect. Although I'm pretty freaked out I keep reading about what to expect so that I don't completely freak out and loose control while in labor. I signed up for some childbirth classes that begin in January. The description said it will help you to understand relaxation techniques and what to expect. I'm hoping it will calm my nerves a little bit. I would check to see if the hospital you will be delivering in has any kind of classes they offer. Anyway- Good Luck to you and congratulations :)

The epidural is great. As soon as I got it the pain went away. I guess it depends on your labor. My son was 9.5 ponds and was stuck in the birth canal so there at the very end I could feel the pain. For about 6 months after if I layed in the floor my back would hurt. That was the only side effect I had.

Labor really hurts. I had epidurals all three times, and they really helped. They don't take long, and they're well worth the few minutes of pain. With my first epidural, I had a weird tingly feeling in my upper back that would come and go for a few months afterward. I had no side effects with my second, and with my third, I was VERY itchy for a couple of hours after it wore off. But, yes, I would still get them if I did it again.

I had an Epidural and did not observe any unhealthy facet results. But I have heard that it might probably intent the youngster to be a bit of torpid in the beginning and it might probably additionally make it tricky so that you can push and to grasp whilst to push for the reason that you're numb and, of direction are not able to think whatever. My epidural was once dressed in off whilst it was once time for me to push, so I would kinda think stuff plus the surgeon and nurse instructed me whilst I was once having contractions and whilst to push. My daughter was once additionally born very responsive. Personally, I could not have performed it with out the epidural. I believe the well outweighs the unhealthy, on this case.

Labor hurts really bad I have had one with an epidual at around 4-5cm and then they turned off an hour before I started pushing so I regained the need to push, I had the epidual really late with the second and ended up having a c-section (due to the size of baby) and the last on I only had IV painkillers that are short lasting but got through the pain fine.
