it's winter and he sleeps day and night

perhaps in the wild....but as pets they are not supposed to. How cold is it in the room he is kept in? Maybe you need to warm it up a bit. If it were mine I'd check with a vet or try an internet search about it. That does not sound normal.

I don't think he should be hibernating if he's an indoor pet. Gerbils do sleep a lot though. Is he still getting up sometimes to eat and run on his wheel?

i think it could be dead that is weird and strange if it isn't if it wakes up you are fine
