It's going to vary from place to place, it would be easiest to call your local gas company and ask.

Begin by contacting the gas company. They have a policy the meter must be readable, but with new remote meters, this might be relaxing. Indeed, moving the meter may require all new piping to accommodate the increased length. In my neighborhood there is one gas meter well off from the house........I have no clue how that happened unless there was a trailer and some earlier time. Each city has their own regulations, you'll have to call.

First things first, you will not get any gas company to install a meter inside the property, they have to be outside now, you will pay for any piping to the meter from the road/path (inside the boundary)
You will pay for any piping from the meter to the appliances, the meter is fitted free after the pipework from the main is done.
I had a meter and pipework (10metres) and it cost £486.00 but the meter was free though!

To have a prepayment meter fitted it would be free. To have a meter fitted where you get billed you may be charged a fee which you would recieve back after one year. They do this to ensure you pay for your gas, with a prepayment meter you obviously have to prepay for your gas where as a normal meter you do not !!

Don't get a meter it's more expensive. There is gas you just need to get it connected. British gas will hook it up for you i expect.
