Stay the Course was never about doing the exact same thing all of the time. No need to back pedal, We will stay the course in Iraq. Which means that the stated goals for our involvement in theater have not changed, have not wavered, and will not be altered. We will remain in Iraq until they have a Stable Government in place. They have well trained and reliable police, military, and Border Guards. And have a hope of defending themselves against an aggressor nations like Iran or Turkey or Syria. "Stay the Course" means we will not abandon the Iraqi People the way we abandoned the Vietnamese.
Politicos have always tried to turn the debate, not on the issues at hand. But by taking things out of context.

Didn't you get the talking points? We're not stay the course and we never have been. Chimpy said so . So we're gonna keep on with the plan of not having a plan and blame the lack of a plan on the Democrats and keep Rummy and do everything just as we have been doing it all along. But we're definately not stay the course!!

As long as our illustrious President keeps going with Rumsfeld policy on this war we are losing more soldiers everyday it is time someone with some brains takes over this job
and figures out the best way to start moving back and get someone who knows this region and the people and how they think maybe he could get the different fractions to sit down and talk and keep Rumsfeld out of it let them make there own decisions on what is best for their country we can not decide for them it only causes more problems hopefully then we could start moving our troops out of there

Only person who would know that is in the White house, and I don't think he knows really. A "long time" is the best estimate there is.
